LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Western Illinois erupted for 10 runs early, including seven runs all
coming with two outs in the second inning, as the Leathernecks ended an
eight-game losing streak with a 14-6 win at UALR Tuesday night (March 23).
The game was delayed by an hour due to the umpires not showing up. Both starting
pitchers did not adjust to the delayed start.
Western erupted for three runs in the first. Andrew Hagins drew a bases
loaded walk with no one out, then later Cole Waddell ripped a 2-run single for
the early lead.
The Trojans quickly responded by drawing leadoff walks
against Chris Macek then Jason Houston lined a 3-run homer to tie the game.
Tyler Parks followed with a single to chase Macek. Austin Brough got a ground
ball double play then a flyball out to end the frame.
In the second Western sent 13 batters to the plate using four hits, four walks,
two hit batters and an error to score the seven runs. Chris Giglio singled, Tom Lilja walked and two batters later Jason Summers was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Hagins lifted a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead.
Bryan Jordan singled to reload the bases. Cole Waddell
ripped a RBI single to score Lilja. When the right fielder bobbled the ball,
that allowed Summers to score as well and chase starter Garrett Graziano.
Tony Prior walked John Koszulinski then Rich Mascheri followed
by lining a RBI single. Giglio walked to again reload the bases. Lilja was hit
by a pitch then Dan Dispensa walked to extend the lead to 10-3.
Andrew Loe gave up the walk to Dispensa but from there did
not allow another WIU run and the Trojans threatened to tie the score in the
fifth.
Casey McCollum reached on a leadoff error, stole second then
scored on Houston's RBI single. Parks delivered a RBI double, then following a
hit batter and walk UALR loaded the bases.
Head coach Mike Villano brought in David Hill in relief. He
struck out Tommie Johnson then retired Aaron Jarosh on a groundout to end the
threat. From there Hill cruised over the final four innings, allowing just a
two-out hit in the eighth to secure the win.
Brough (1-2) allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits in 4.1 innings. He
walked one and struck out five. Hill earned his second unconventional save of
the year, blanking the Trojans over the final 4.2 innings. He walked three but
fanned a career-high five batters.
Western out-hit the Trojans 16-8, led by Lilja and Summers with three hits
apiece as every starter had at least one hit. Waddell, Jordan and Giglio added
two hits each. Not only did Western record its third straight game with 10-plus
hits, the Leathernecks drew a season-high 14 walks in the win.
Graziano (1-2) gave up eight runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Five of the six
UALR pitchers walked at least two batters. Houston, Parks and McCollum had two
hits apiece.
The two teams close out the midweek series on Wednesday afternoon (March 24),
first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
