Western Illinois Athletics NCAA Infractions Case
Western Illinois University Athletics has resolved an infractions case with the NCAA related to student-athlete certification errors that occurred between 2021 and 2024.
The violations stemmed from administrative and procedural breakdowns in the institution’s certification process, including insufficient communication among campus units and inadequate training for staff responsible for determining eligibility. These deficiencies resulted in errors in the certification of student-athletes across multiple sports programs.
As a result, more than 20 student-athletes competed while ineligible during the affected period. In some cases, student-athletes received impermissible benefits or participated without meeting NCAA requirements tied to academic progress, transfer eligibility, or seasons of competition.
Western Illinois identified the issues and self-reported the violations. The institution cooperated fully throughout the NCAA review process and has since implemented corrective measures to address the deficiencies within its compliance and certification systems.
NCAA Resolution
The case was resolved through the NCAA’s negotiated resolution process. The violations were classified a Level II Mitigated violation, and the NCAA determined they were not the result of intentional misconduct.
As part of the resolution, the following penalties have been imposed:
-
A three-year period of probation
-
A $25,000 financial penalty
-
Vacation of team records in contests in which ineligible student-athletes participated
-
Additional compliance education and monitoring requirements
There are no postseason bans, scholarship reductions, or recruiting restrictions associated with the resolution.
Western Illinois has taken steps to strengthen its compliance infrastructure, including enhanced training for athletics and campus personnel, improved internal communication protocols, and additional safeguards within the certification process. The department remains committed to maintaining compliance with NCAA rules and upholding the integrity of its athletics programs.
