LAWRENCE, KS. — The Western Illinois Track & Field team turned heads at the Kansas Relays this weekend, rewriting the school record book.
In the women's 1500-meter run, Lydia Bennett led the charge with a strong 5th-place finish in 4:55.05, while Greta Sieren followed close behind in 10th place with a time of 5:05.77. Madison Trevena kept the momentum going in the 5000-meter run, recording a time 18:28.16 to secure 7th overall.
The team of Bennett, Sieren, Hannah Steinmeyer, and Aylana Cezar delivered a solid performance in the 4x800-meter relay, finishing 4th overall.
On the men's side, Sean Hudspath opened the meet with an impressive 8th-place finish in the 1500-meter run, posting a time of 4:01.48. Robert Perry wasn't far behind, earning 10th with a time of 4:03.58. The 4x800-meter relay squad of Richard Brown, Eason Comer, Hudspath, and Perry capped off the running events with an 8th-place finish in 7:53.84.
WIU also made a statement in the field events. Cage Davison leapt to 5th in the long jump at 7.05 meters, while Rayvon Wright took 7th in the triple jump with a mark of 14.10 meters.
Stealing the spotlight was Arnie Grunert, who soared to a new school record and first-place finish in the pole vault with an electrifying jump of 5.62 meters.
On the women's side, Kelsey Hutchins made her mark in the triple jump, landing in the top 10 with a jump of 11.75 meters — the 10th-best in program history.
Up next, the Leathernecks will split their squad between the Drake Relays (April 23–26) and the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College (April 24–25) as they look to carry their momentum.
