Butler Sweeps Doubleheader

The Leathernecks dropped both games, 9-4 and 6-1, on Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Western Illinois baseball team (0-6) was swept by the Butler Bulldogs (6-0) in a doubleheader on Sunday (Feb. 23) 9-4 and 6-1.

Kevin Raisbeck had an afternoon to remember at the plate. The senior finished 4-6 with two doubles, an RBI and walk in the nine-hole.

GAME ONE

Toby Allred brought in Trenton Bauer, who leadoff the second with a single on an RBI groundout, and Kevin Raisbeck doubled into right-center to put Western on top 2-0.

Butler answered and took a 4-2 lead in their half of the second on a grand slam with two-outs. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth on the double down the leftfield line.

It was again Bauer and Alex Dorethy sparking the offense. After a double to begin the sixth, Dorethy welcomed the first Butler reliever and smashed an opposite-field home run to make it a one-run game, 5-4. The long ball from the lefty marked the second time in his career he has homered in back-to-back games.

Brett Sears saw his older brother Dillon Sears in the series opener reach base each time up at the plate, and he kept the family name shining. The right-hander struck out the first two batters he faced in his 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Back-to-back two-run marks from Butler in the seventh and eighth secured game two of the series.

GAME TWO

In the series finale, Butler put up a five-spot to start game two of the doubleheader as that's all they needed to stay undefeated and sweep the series.

Johnny Beck (3.0), Justin Foy (1.0), Austin Edwards (2.0), and Jack Bell (1.0) all made appearances out of the bullpen and held BU to one run total. The relief effort combined for six Ks.

The Purple and Gold got on the board in the fifth. Drue Galassi knocked a two-out RBI single to center that brought in Diego Munoz for its only run of the game.

Western Illinois heads to Memphis next weekend (Feb. 28 - March 1) for a three-game series and takes on the Tigers for the first time since 2004.
