Memphis Takes Series Opener

The Tigers defeated Western 24-3 on Friday (Feb. 28).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Offensive explosion in the middle frames by the Memphis Tigers (6-3) secured the series opener 24-3 over Western Illinois (0-7) on Friday (Feb. 28).

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with back-to-back two run marks in the first two innings. 

Drue Galassi responded next frame and blasted his first home run of the season to make it 1-4. His 21st career dinger moved him for a three-way tie for 5th all-time in program history with Chris Howard (1984-87) and Stan Scott (1983-86). 

The Offense exploded for the AAC (American Athletic Conference) opponent with a 10 run fifth inning followed by a six-run sixth.

Western Illinois added two runs in the final frame. Gage Cruz brought around Chase VanDerGinst on a sacf fly and Galassi knocked his second RBI of the day and third hit of the contest. 

Game two of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 29) at FedEx Park.

  • Drue Galassi moved to 5th all-time in program history with his 21st career home run and is now 5th in RBI with 110. 
  • Kevin Raisbeck has three straight multi-hit games and 17th of his career.
  • WIU drops to 8-22-1 in the all-time series. 
  • Toby Allred collected his first hit as a Leatherneck in the ninth. 
  • Jackson Gray made his season debut in relief in the sixth inning.
