Leathernecks Topped By Tennessee Tech, Evansville

Western Illinois finished 1-2 in the Leatherneck Invitational

MACOMB, Ill.- The Leathernecks were topped by Tennessee Tech, 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-22, 25-12), and Evansville, 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 15-11) to close out the 2018 Leatherneck Invitational.

"It was really nice to see the fight in our girls tonight. It was great to see them have leads in the fifth set and to come from behind late in sets. As a coach, you want to see the toughness our girls displayed today," said head coach Ben Staupe. "Although it was not the outcome we were looking for, I am really proud of the team today. We will clean up mistakes in practice and we are looking forward to getting back on the court."

GAME ONE

The Leathernecks jumped out to a quick 6-1 start in the first set behind kills from Melanie Patenaude and Shiah Sanders. The Leathernecks captured a 10-6 lead in the opening set but the Golden Eagles rattled off eight of the next nine points to take a 14-11 lead. The Purple and Gold continued to fight to and took a 20-18 advantage, but Tennessee Tech came back to win 25-23.

The second started in a familiar fashion, as Western seized an early 5-2 advantage. The Leathernecks took five-straight points in the middle of the set to go ahead 17-7 and never looked back. Early starts were a common occurrence for the Leathernecks through the first three sets, as WIU jumped out 6-2 in the third. Sophomore Jovana Bulatovic recorded her first collegiate kill to pull the Leathernecks to within one point late in the set, 21-20. After a Rachel Thomas kill, the Golden Eagles took the third set.

Tennessee Tech took the early advantage and the Leathernecks could not recover in the fourth set, as the Golden Eagles won the match to go 2-1 in the Leatherneck Invitational. In the match, Patenaude led Western Illinois with 11 kills, while Emma Norris ended with seven and Mariah Mitchell with five. Jaime Johnson finished with 24 assists.

GAME TWO:

Western Illinois showed resilience in each set during the second match of the evening but came up short 3-2 against Evansville. The Leathernecks took set one and two before dropping the final three to the Purple Aces.

Down 17-14 in the opening set, Mitchell and Patenaude recorded back-to-back kills to bring the Leathernecks within one point. The Leathernecks found themselves down again, this time 22-18, but rallied to tie the game at 24. Norris put together consecutive kills that ended the set in the Leathernecks favor.

The Purple and Gold jumped out to a commanding 17-9 lead in the second set but the Purple Aces scored eight of nine points later in the set to tie the game at 20. The Leathernecks kept their composure and finished off the set winning four of five points to capture the set, 25-23.

The Purple Aces took the second and third sets to force a decisive fifth set in the final match of the 2018 Leatherneck Invitational. With the score knotted at six apiece, Evansville scored four-straight points to force a Leatherneck timeout. The Leathernecks won the point out of the timeout, but it was not enough as they fell 15-11.

Patenaude led the Leathernecks with 16 kills, while Norris recorded 15 and Sanders logged nine. Claire Grove ended with 17 digs.

The Leathernecks are in Peoria, Ill. next weekend for the CEFCU Invitational on Aug.31-Sept.1 with matches against host Bradley, George Washington and Toledo.
