Braves Top Leathernecks, 3-1

The Leathernecks return to the court at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow.

PEORIA, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team was fell to the Bradley Braves on Friday night (Aug. 31), 3-1, in their first game of the CEFCU Invitational.  After Bradley took the first second, the Leathernecks took the second, but fell in the final two.

Behind two kills from Melanie Patenaude, the Leathernecks took a quick 6-4 lead on the home team to begin the match. Down 7-6, Bradley found its stride and rattled off six out of seven points to capture a 12-8 lead. Later in the set, Mariah Mitchell recorded a kill to pull the Leathernecks within four points (23-19), but it was not enough as the Braves took the set, 25-20.

Western Illinois proved not to be discouraged in the second set, as the Purple and Gold hopped out to a 4-2 advantage. The Braves quickly came back to take the lead 7-4, but an attacking error stymied their run. Down 21-15, the Leathernecks showed resilience and put together 10-straight points to win the set, 25-21. Two kills from Patenaude and a pair from Mitchell highlighted the Leatherneck run. 

With the match tied at a set apiece, the Braves took the final to sets (25-19, 25-22) to win the match. For the Leathernecks, Patenaude recorded a team-high 11 kills, while Emma Norris and Shiah Sanders each notched seven. Jaime Johnson recorded 17 assists while Cassie Hunt logged 15. Western Illinois had four players with double-digit kills as Claire Grove (21), Erika Moore (17), Johnson (16) and Patenaude (10) each had 10 or more kills. On the defensive end, Mackenzie Steckler recorded seven total blocks.

The Leathernecks return to the court tomorrow for two matches against George Washington and Toledo. First serve is set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
