Leathernecks Outlasted by George Washington, Toledo

The Leathernecks fell twice on Saturday

PEORIA, Ill. Western Illinois fell twice on Saturday in the CEFCU Invitational. The Leathernecks fell 3-2 to George Washington and 3-0 to Toledo.
 
GAME ONE
 
The Leathernecks dropped the first two sets to George Washington but were not discouraged, as WIU took the Colonials to five sets. The Colonials took the first set 25-12, as the Leathernecks could not rally to win the first set.  During the second set,  Western Illinois took the lead 5-4, but could not keep the momentum and fell 25-17.
 
Not discouraged, the Leathernecks came out with a purpose in the third set. Up 7-5. the Leathernecks won four out of five points to take the 11-6 advantage. The Purple and Gold continued the pressure and took the 19-18 advantage. Down 23-19, the Leathernecks took five out of the next six points to go up 26-25. After being knotted at 26, Emma Norris recorded a kill and George Washington recorded an attacking error to give the Leathernecks a set win.
 
Western Illinois took advantage of its momentum in the fourth set as it took a 5-3 lead in the fourth set. With the score tied at 13, the Leathernecks scored three-straight points to take the 16-13 advantage. WIU took the set 25-20 to force a fifth set.
 
The Leathernecks made the fifth set interesting, but could not hold on, as they lost 21-19. Melanie Patenaude finished with a double-double, as she recorded 12 kills and 11 digs. Jaime Johnson led the team with 24 digs in the contest. Mackenzie Steckler also recorded 12 kills and hit at a .417 clip.
 
GAME TWO
 
The Leathernecks lost the second game versus against Toledo, 3-0. The Rockets took the first set 25-15. The Leathernecks could not do much in the second set as they lost 25-17.
 
The second set continued to be close as the Leathernecks were down just 9-8 in the second set. The Rockets took control and finished 25-15. After Toledo took the lead 21-15, the Leathernecks scored four-straight points to bring the score to 21-19, Rockets. Toledo took the third set 25-19.
 
Emma Norris led WIU with six kills while Patenaude recorded five kills. Grove finished with 16 digs.
 
The Leathernecks are back on the court against University of Albany on Sept. 7 at 11 a .m.
