Men's Track and Field

LaRue, Hardin lead Leatherneck track and field at Cyclone Open

AMES, IowaDana LaRue and Lawrence Hardin were among the top finishers for the Western Illinois track and field team at Iowa State's Cyclone Open this past weekend.

LaRue took second place in the women's shot put with a mark of 14.23 meters. Saturday's performance marked the fifth time this season that LaRue has finished third or better in the shot put, including two first-place performances.

Hardin, competing in just his second meet with the Fighting Leathernecks, finished second in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.08 meters. His performance marked the second-straight meet that Hardin has finished in the top five.

“Overall I think we had a really solid meet,” interim head coach Matt Morris said. “We rested a lot of kids this weekend but that rest should help us when we come back here next week.”

On the men's side, Western was also led by Jason Crisman, whose mark of 15.27 meters was good for a second- place finish in the men's shot put. Crisman also took fifth place in the weight throw with a mark of 16.02 meters. Paul Hames also finished in the top five (fourth place) in the shot put with a mark of 15.20 meters.

Other top finishers for the men included Ray Richardson with a 10th-place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.09 seconds) and a 13th place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.66 seconds). Aaron Russo finished with a time of 1:57.75 minutes in the 800-meter run, good for a 13th-place finish out of 31 competitors.

The women were led by Katie Jay with a second-place finish in the 600-yard run (1:25.31). Alycia Thurston finished third in the 3,000-meter run (11:17.24) and ChrisDell Harris finished the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.73 seconds.

Other top finishers for the women included Amy Byers with a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.12 minutes.

”Overall I think we performed really well in a tough field,” Morris said. “Our throwers did a great job again. The men's throwers had a really good meet and Dana continued her solid performance on the women's side.”

Western concludes its regular season with a return trip to Iowa State's ISU Classic next weekend before The Summit League Championships, Feb. 28-March 1.
