Western Illinois’ Arnie Grunert Vaults to No. 3 in NCAA Rankings

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois University junior pole vaulter Arnie Grunert delivered a record-breaking performance at the Normal Invite in Bloomington, Illinois, clearing 5.53 meters (18 feet, 1.75 inches) to set a new school record and secure the third-highest mark in the NCAA this season.

Grunert's vault not only earned him first place at the meet but also marked a significant milestone in his athletic career. This achievement follows his 2024 season, where he was named an Honorable Mention All-American after tying for 17th place at the NCAA National Outdoor Meet in Eugene, Oregon.

"Arnie did a great job vaulting in the meet Saturday at ISU. He broke the school record twice during the meet. His highest jump of 5.53 m ranks him 3rd in the NCAA Division I level. He knows he can jump higher. He will continue to work hard and have fun doing that." said WIU assistant coach Tom Unruh. "The goal is to jump his best at the end of the season. His teammates, the track coaching staff, and our Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott have all been an important part in Arnie's success as a vaulter."

Grunert and the Leathernecks are set to compete next at the Kansas Relays, beginning Thursday, April 17.
