WIU Women's Track & Field Win Cougar Alumni Open

Macomb, Ill- The WIU Women's Track & Field team took home first place at the Cougar Alumni Open on Friday night finishing the meet with 136 points.

Ashley Thomas led the way for the Leathernecks placing first in both the long jump and triple jump. Thomas set a PR in the long jump with a jump of 5.74 M and also set a PR in the triple jump with a jump of 11.35 M. Her long jump of 5.74 tied for the fifth best in program history. 

Finishing behind Thomas in the triple jump was Kelsey Hutchins, who finished second with a jump of 11.12 M. The duo of Hutchins and Thomas combined for 28 points in the field events.  

Rounding out the field events was Emma Ponx, who set a program record in the pole vault with a jump of 3.89 M. The Leathernecks had four girls score points in the event with Dana Surwillo (3.70 M), Colleen Johnson (3.55 M), and Angel Stanley (3.25 M), placing second through fourth in the pole vault. Surwillo's jump of 3.70 M is sixth best in program history.

On the running side, Greta Sieren and Krissy Petrou finished first and second respectively in the 800M. Sieren finished with a time of 2:36.40 with Petrou right behind her with a time of 2:43.06. Jolena Site placed first in the 400M with a time of 58.35 setting a PR, while Bria Armstrong placed second in the 60M hurdles with a time of 9.44. Lydia Bennet placed fifth in the 1 mile run with a time of 5:19.38 to round out the running events for the Leathernecks. 

On the Men's side, the Leathernecks finished in fourth place with 90 points. Lucas Burmeister placed second in the 200 M with a time of 21.86. Also placing second in the 800 M was Sean Hudspath with a time of 1:58.57. 

In the 1 mile run, the Leathernecks had three runners place in the top four with Richard Brown winning the mile wth a time of 4:25.99. Finishing behind him was Robert Perry who finished in third with a time of 4:27.56 and Eason Comer finishing in fourth with a time of 4:35.15. 

On the field events side, Rayvon Wright placed in three of the events. Wright placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 14.27 M, third in the high jump with a jump of 1.93 M, and fifth in the long jump with a jump of 6.56 M. Toriano Tate also placed in the triple jump with a jump of 13.50 M and Garrison Murray placed second in the high jump with a jump of 1.93 M. Rounding out the field events was Cage Davison who placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 6.65 M. 

The Leathernecks will be back in action in the New year when they travel to Champaign, Illinois to compete in the Fighting Illini Open on Jan. 11.
