Western Illinois Track and Field Face Busy Weekend

| By:

Leathernecks at meets at Central College and Iowa

The Western Illinois men's and women's indoor track and field teams are back in action this week, taking on a pair of meets.

On Thursday, the Leathernecks head to Central College in Pella, Iowa to run in the Dutch Winter Multi on Thursday and Friday. Western Illinois remains busy, taking a short bus ride north to Iowa City to participate in the Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday.

Western Illinois competes against Butler CC, Drake, Iowa Western, Kansas City, Iowa and Northern Iowa at Iowa.

At Central, only the Pentathlon and Heptathlon are participating, making it a busy day for WIU's Cadence Stanley, Matthew Thomas and Franka Weil-Restrepo.

Stanley was part of a NJCAA Championship team at Iowa Western CC. Matthew "Hank" Thomas was an 8x Illinois class 1A state champion for Danville High School who finished second in the pole vault his senior year, last spring.

Weil-Restrepo's mother
was a 1992 Olympic bronze medalist in the 400 meters and still holds the Nebraska school record in the 400 meters at 50.14 from 1991. Her father finished 6th in the 1988 Olympic shot put.

"We have some talented, hard working student-athletes in all our event groups but the multis are extra special," Brokaw said. "They have the longest practices, putting in the most training hours in order to successfully juggle multiple event disciplines. Franka and Hank are just freshmen, but they have shown a lot of promising potential. Cadence is in her senior year and I'm really excited to see how well she finishes out her collegiate career this spring."

LAST TIME OUT | The Leathernecks had a strong showing at their first event in over a month at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational at Iowa. Lucas Burmeister led the way, running the second-fastest indoor 200 time in program history. Aliyah Adams also had a strong showing, placing in the top 10 in a pair of individual events (60, 200) and the 4x400 relay.

In the 400, Jaiden Young also put himself in the Leatherneck track and field top 10, running a 49.36, the ninth-best time. In the men's 600, Isaac Jones finished seventh overall, finishing in 1:22.56. In the 800, Logan Lommel nearly ran a personal-best, finishing seventh in 1:53.64. In the mile, Sean Hudspath also ran a career best, finishing seventh in 4:18.35.

For the women, in the 200, Adams would have another strong run, finishing fifth in 25.51. In the 600, the Leathernecks had a pair of strong runs as Hannah Steinmeyer finished second in 1:40.43.
