Late Western rally falls short at Murray State

Cruz, Sievers each drive in two

MURRAY, Kent. – The Western Illinois baseball team rallied from an early deficit to take a lead late only to see Murray State make a comeback, then top WIU in extra innings.
The Leathernecks nearly stole a victory on the road, before falling 8-7 in 10 innings on Saturday.
Western Illinois trailed 4-0 after five innings but scored a run in the sixth and four in the seventh, taking a 5-4 lead.
A Chase VanDerGinst sacrifice fly scored Kory Olsen in the sixth to get the rally going.
In the seventh, Adam Juran would score on an error, which was followed by Gage Cruz's RBI single that scored Slavens.
Jack Sievers would give the Leathernecks the lead with a two-run double, scoring Cruz and Olsen.
In the eighth, Western would add to the lead as Nick Mitchell's single scored Derek Botaletto.
Murray State would draw even, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Leathernecks would retake the lead as Cruz stayed hot, doubling home Olsen.
Unfortunately for Western Illinois, Murray State would score a run in the ninth, then after a scoreless Western 10th, the Racers would win the game, scoring on an error in the bottom of the 10th.
Olsen and Cruz would each finish with a pair of hits for the Leathernecks, while Cruz and Sievers each had two RBI.
Olsen successfully set the table all game, scoring thrice.
On the mound, Jace Warkentien started, pitching five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. He also had three strikeouts.
Kyle Rosenfeld struck out three in three innings of work.
The two teams meet Sunday with a 1 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
