One for the record book

10-run inning propels Leathernecks to road win

MURRAY, Kent. – It was a day for the record book, both as a program and for individuals wearing Western Illinois purple on Sunday.
Thanks to a 10-run fourth inning, Western Illinois scored a 17-6 win over Murray State, ending the three-game series with a victory.
The 10 runs were the most the Leathernecks have scored since a 10-run fourth against St. Ambrose on April 30, 2014. WIU won that game 18-5.
As for the individuals, several Leathernecks had career days in the victory.
Leading the way was catcher Adam Juran, who set a new single-season personal best with five runs batted in.
The highlight was a three-run home run to left by the junior in the sixth inning.
Derek Botaletto also set a new personal-best for hits in a game, registering four knocks.
Matt Santarelli also joined the party, driving in three, a new season high for him as well.
In fact, the bulk of the damage was done by the bottom three in Western Illinois' order as Botaletto, Juran and Santarelli went a combined 8-13 with six runs and 11 RBI.
While the bottom third did their part, they had plenty of help as 10 different Western players scored at least one run, led by CJ Richmond, Botaletto and Jack Sievers, who all cross the plate thrice.
Seven Western players had at least two hits and nine different players drove in at least one run.
It was not just the hitters who had career days.
Starter Caden Kratz tossed a season-high four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five.
The combination of Bryan Raymond, Jack Carberry and Jack Bell would close the door, tossing a combined five innings of four-hit, three-run ball.
Bell made his 29th appearance of the season, placing him one outing back of tying the program record for appearances in a single season with four games to go.

The Leathernecks improve to 7-41 on the season and play their final nonconference game of the season on Tuesday, visiting Eastern Illinois.
Western Illinois closes out the year next weekend at North Dakota State.
