Bullpen's big day not enough

Leathernecks fall to Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, IL – The Western Illinois bullpen turned in a solid effort on Tuesday but it was not enough as the Leathernecks fell to Eastern Illinois 6-1 in the nonconference finale.
The trio of Jake Armstrong, Jacob Greenan and Tre Benjamin tossed six scoreless innings, striking out two, walking three and giving up five hits.
Armstrong led the way, tossing four innings in his longest stit since an April 6 appearance against Illinois State.
Unfortunately for Western Illinois, they fell behind early and could not take advantage of the bullpen efforts.
Eastern Illinois scored three in the first, two in the second and a run in the third.
The Panther lead remained 6-0 until the top of the seventh when the Leathernecks were able to break through.
Gage Cruz led off with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
With one out, Chase VanDerGinst laced a double to left, scoring Cruz.
Western Illinois could not get any closer, going scoreless the rest of the game.
The Leathernecks conclude the season this week, making one last road trip for a three-game series at North Dakota State.
Game one begins Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
