Western falls in doubleheader at NDSU

Bell enters record book; Sears and Mitchell each have 5 hits

The Western Illinois baseball team dropped a pair of games at North Dakota State on Friday, falling in the opener 8-3, then losing 7-3 in the nightcap.
The wins lock up an outright Summit League title for the Bison while WIU fell to 7-44.
The two teams meet in the regular season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fargo.
 
GAME 1
North Dakota State 8, Western Illinois 3
The Leathernecks dropped the opener at North Dakota State on Friday, falling 8-3.
The Bison scored a run in the first, one in the second and two in the third, taking a 4-0 lead after three.
Western Illinois was able to get back into the game in the fourth as Nick Mitchell led off the inning with a triple, then would score after an error.
Dillon Sears would follow with a single, then come around to score on a Jack Sievers single.
North Dakota State would strike back though, scoring two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, going up 8-2.
Western Illinois would get three straight hits with two out in the eighth as Mitchell, Sears and Kory Olsen all singled, with Olsen plating Mitchell to make it 8-3.
Sears finished the game with three hits and a run.
Mitchell added two hits and a pair of runs.
Olsen and Sievers each added a single RBI.
In the eighth inning, a bit of program history was made as Jack Bell appeared in his 30th game of the season, tying the program record for appearances in a single season.
Bell would toss a scoreless inning for the Leathernecks.
Jace Warkentien started and took the loss, tossing five innings of six-run, nine-hit ball.
 
GAME 2
North Dakota State 7, Western Illinois 3
In the second game, the Leathernecks took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Sears singled home Mitchell.
The Bison would tie the game in the bottom of the second but in the third Western Illinois retook the lead.
With Sears on first and Mitchell on second, both runners attempted to steal a base.
The ensuing throw would get away and allow Mitchell to score.
NDSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run, then took the lead with one in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, WIU tied the game once again as CJ Richmond was able to get into a rundown long enough, allowing Sievers to score.
Unfortunately North Dakota State took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs, then added two more runs in the eighth.
Mitchell and Botaletto each finished with three hits while Sears added two.
Mitchell scored two runs while Sears had Western's lone RBI.
