Leathernecks top Bison in season finale

The Western Illinois baseball team closed out the 2022 season with a victory, topping North Dakota State 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Kyle Rosenfeld led the way for the Leathernecks, tossing five innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit while striking out seven and walking four.
Western Illinois trailed 3-0 after NDSU scored a run in the first and two in the second but in the fourth, the Leathernecks were able to even the score, plating three runs.
Jack Sievers led off the inning with a single, CJ Richmond followed with a double.
After a Toby Allred walk loaded the bases, Derek Botaletto put Western on the board with a fielder's choice.
Adam Juran followed with an RBI single to score Richmond. Matt Santarelli's sacrifice fly tied the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied into the seventh when the Leathernecks took the lead for good.
Santarelli walked, then moved to third on a Nick Mitchell single. Kory Olsen would drive in Santarelli, giving WIU the lead.
Western scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth as Gage Cruz's bases loaded walk plated Dillon Sears.
Botaletto capped Western's scoring, reaching on a fielder's choice to plate Sievers.
The runs held up with Rosenfeld on the mound.
Rosenfeld shutout the Bison over the final five innings, earning the win.
The five innings pitched was the longest outing of the season for Rosenfeld.
A bit of program history was also made on Saturday as Jack Bell made his 31st appearance of the season, setting a new program mark.
Bell tossed a scoreless inning.
Mitchell and Richmond each led the offense with a pair of hits.
Botaletto added two RBI.
