Baseball Welcomes Oral Roberts For Three-Game Series

The Leathernecks look for their first series win against the Golden Eagles.

Western Illinois baseball begins its seven-game homestand with a three-game battle with the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The Leathernecks and Golden Eagles will play a single game on Friday (April 15) at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday (April 16) beginning at noon.
 
Headlines
  • Western Illinois is coming off a 9-1 loss on Tuesday (April 12) to the Missouri Tigers in Columbia. Missouri used a three-run home run in the fourth to create separation and eventually pull away for the victory.
  • Chase VanDerGinst is coming off a big game versus the Tigers, finishing a perfect 3-3 with a run scored. The Rock Island, Ill., native had just two hits entering the game but surpassed his season total with his second career three-hit performance.
  • Nick Mitchell extended his hitting streak to nine games against Missouri, going 1-4 with a stolen base. Mitchell's nine-game streak is tied as the longest hitting streak by a Leatherneck this season.
  • Mitchell and Kory Olsen continue to be two of the best hitters in the Summit League, both currently in the top five in batting average. Mitchell is third in the Summit League with a .347 average, and Olsen is right behind at fourth with a .343 average.
  • Left-hander Brian Raymond has been among the Summit League's best pitchers in not allowing hits. Raymond has allowed 36 hits in 37.2 innings, good for the eighth fewest allowed in the conference.
  • Adam Juran continues to be a defensive leader behind home plate, leading the Summit League in runners caught stealing. Juran has thrown out 12 runners and is the only Summit League catcher with more than 10 this season.
  • Speaking of defense, shortstop Derek Botaletto continues to be a roadblock for the Leatherneck infield. Botaletto is fifth in the conference with 63 assists and owns a 96.4 fielding percentage.
 
Scouting the Opponent | The Golden Eagles come into Macomb with an 18-12 overall record and a 4-2 record in league play. Oral Roberts plays its first Summit League series since April 1-3, when they dropped two of three to Omaha. ORU is coming off a 9-8 win at Missouri State on Tuesday (April 12). The Golden Eagles had a highlight victory earlier in the season, defeating second-ranked Ole Miss 8-4 in seven innings of a doubleheader. Infielder Mac McCroskey has been the top hitter for the Golden Eagles. McCroskey is fifth in the Summit League with a .339 average, second in hits with 39, fifth in RBIs with 24, and seventh in OPS at .925.
