Leathernecks Edged By North Dakota in Summit League Opener

Western fell 3-2 to North Dakota in the programs' first ever match.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois volleyball was outlasted in a five-set match to open Summit League play against North Dakota. Mariah Mitchell put together another impressive performance as she led the team with 14 kills while hitting .258.

Mitchell picked up where she left off from the weekend to help the Leathernecks capture a quick 6-3 as she recorded two of the first three kills of the evening for Western Illinois. After falling behind 17-14, the Leathernecks scored three points to tie the set and force a Fighting Hawk timeout. North Dakota recovered and won the set, 25-22.

The Leathernecks bounced back in the second set and took another 6-3 lead to begin the set. This time, the Leathernecks would come out on top. North Dakota climbed within three points at 22-19 to force a Western timeout but the Leathernecks closed out the set to win 25-19. Mitchell recorded six second set kills to lead  Western Illinois.

The Fighting Hawks took a 4-1 lead to begin the third set and kept the advantage until the Leathernecks knotted the set up at 11. After tying up the set again at 17, the Leathernecks fell 25-20. 

The Leathernecks showed resilience after falling behind 2-1 and forced a fifth set. After North Dakota took a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, Western scored six-straight points to take a 7-4 advantage. Western Illinois pushed its lead to four points at 18-14 after Mackenzie Steckler scored. The Leathernecks held on and took the set, 25-18.

In a decisive fifth set, the Fighting Hawks came out and took an 8-4 advantage at the break in the final frame. The Leathernecks scored the first point after switching sides, but could not hold on and fell 15-8.

The Leathernecks hit the road to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a Sept. 25 tilt against Purdue Fort Wayne.
