WIU Volleyball Downed at Purdue Fort Wayne

The Leathernecks fell 3-1 to the Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -  The Western Illinois volleyball team took the first set from Purdue Fort Wayne, but dropped the next three Tuesday (Sept. 25) to fall 3-1 in its first Summit League road match.
 
The Leathernecks got off to a fast start in the first set after Madeline Dieter recorded a pair of kills that put Western up 9-5. In the middle of the set, the Mastodons recovered and took a two-point advantage at 17-15 to force a Western Illinois timeout. WIU halted the Mastodon comeback and took a 20-18 lead that forced Fort Wayne to take another timeout. The Purple and Gold took two out of the last three points and won the first set, 25-23.
 
Purdue Fort Wayne came out of the gates quickly in the second set and captured a 12-6 lead that forced WIU to call a timeout. The Mastodons breezed to take the second set, 25-9. In the third set, Mariah Mitchell recorded back-to-back kills to pull the to within one point at 10-9, but the Dons scored the next four points. Purdue Fort Wayne finished the set with back-to-back kills and won the set, 25-16.
 
In the fourth set, the Mastodons jumped out to a four-point lead that the Leathernecks whittled down to one (7-6). However, Purdue Fort Wayne extended the advantage out to eight (18-10) before winning the set 25-14. Melanie Patenaude and Emma Norris each finished with seven kills while Johnson ended with 25 assists.
 
The Leathernecks return to action Sept. 28 at Omaha.
