Tugba Palazoglu Looks to Compete in 2014 FIBA Women’s World Championship

Leatherneck women’s basketball record-holder hopes to add to her medal count.

ISTANBUL, Turkey – Western Illinois women's basketball alum Tugba Palazoglu has made Turkey's senior women's national team training camp roster for the 2014 FIBA Women's World Championship to be hosted by Turkey starting September 27.

Palazoglu enters training camp with two international medals from EuroBasket 2011 and 2013, and a 2012 London Olympics appearance where the Turkish squad fell shy of the podium, finishing in fifth place. A spot on the final roster would mark Palazoglu's first ever FIBA World Championship and a chance at a third international medal.

While at Western Illinois, the Bolu, Turkey, native appeared in 58 games, started 53 and tallied 1,699 minutes. The guard's .384 three point percentage ranks 5th in the Western Illinois women's basketball record book and her 75 three-pointers made ranked her 10th until 2012. She finished her playing career for the Purple and Gold with 583 points, 253 assists and 108 steals.

With her spot on the training roster, Palazoglu will participate in a two-month training regime. The team will start with four weeks of practice followed by three training tournaments in Turkey and Belarus. Palazoglu and the Turkish national team will return home for nine days of practice before opening the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women against France.
