MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois women's basketball student-athlete Addison "Addi" Brownfield has been named the female recipient of the 2025-26 Ohio Valley Conference Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
The award is presented annually to one male and one female OVC student-athlete of junior or senior standing who best exemplify the characteristics of the late Steve Hamilton through athletic achievement, sportsmanship, and citizenship. Winners are selected by the conference's athletics directors and sports information directors.
The Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award honors the legacy of former Morehead State student-athlete, coach, and administrator Steve Hamilton, whose impact extended far beyond athletics. Hamilton competed on OVC Championship teams in baseball, basketball, and track during his time at Morehead State before going on to an 11-year Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and San Francisco Giants. He later returned to Morehead State as head baseball coach and eventually Director of Athletics, where he helped elevate the university's success both academically and athletically.
Hamilton remains the only individual to have appeared in the NCAA Basketball Championship, a Major League Baseball World Series, and an NBA Championship Series. The award named in his honor recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in competition while also making a meaningful impact in the classroom, on campus, and within their communities.
Brownfield becomes the first Western Illinois student-athlete to earn the honor in the award's 27-year history.
On the court, Brownfield played a key role in leading the Leathernecks to both the OVC regular season and tournament championships during the 2025-26 season. Western finished the year 26-6 overall and 16-4 in conference play.
A four-year starter and team captain, Brownfield surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career this season while earning All-OVC First Team honors and being named OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 12.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per game across 32 contests while shooting 43.8 percent from the field.
In the classroom, the Boonville, Missouri native has maintained a 3.99 GPA as a pre-med student and recently earned the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She has also received the OVC Academic Medal of Honor and multiple selections to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. Brownfield was part of a WIU women's basketball team that posted a 3.86 team GPA, the second-highest among NCAA women's basketball programs.
Away from competition, Brownfield has served as President of Western Illinois' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helping organize mental health initiatives and advocate for student-athletes during a period of significant change in college athletics. She is also active in the community through mentorship with Big Brothers Big Sisters, youth basketball camps, school visits, retirement home outreach, and Special Olympics programming in Costa Rica.
