Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Evansville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Western Illinois baseball (1-6) allowed just two Evansville (6-4) runs during the weekend doubleheader finale Saturday (Mar. 1) in Evansville, Ind., but the Leathernecks were only able to notch one victory over the Purple Aces. Western's offense exploded in the opening 12-1 win, while the second game was a pitching duel with the Aces coming out on top, 1-0.

Sunday's weekend finale has been cancelled due to the threat of inclement weather in both Illinois and Southwestern Indiana.

Game 1: Western Illinois 12, Evansville 1

The Leathernecks got the offense going early and often in the seven-inning contest. As a team Western recorded season highs in runs, hits and RBI during the game.

After being held scoreless on Friday during the weekend opener, the Leathernecks came out firing on Saturday, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Neil DeCook doubled in the first scoring Cody Williams to give WIU the 1-0 lead. DeCook then scored on a Tanner Glore groundout to put the Leathernecks up 2-0. JJ Reimer crossed the plate for Western on a Williams RBI in the second to give Western the 3-0 lead.

Evansville recorded their lone run in the third after Kyle Pollock hit a solo home run over the left field wall. The home run was the first of the year for Pollock.

Neither team put a run across in either the fourth or fifth innings. The Leathernecks then exploded in the sixth inning, scoring nine runs to go up 12-1.  Western recorded 10 hits in the sixth inning alone, with all nine Leatherneck starters either recording a hit or scoring a run in the inning.

Leatherneck starter Tyler Willman (1-1) picked up the win after throwing all seven innings. The junior righty recorded two strikeouts, let up just one run and six UE hits.

Evansville starter Jimmy Ward (0-1) was handed the loss after throwing five innings with nine hits allowed and seven earned runs.

Three Leathernecks recorded multiple hits in the win, led by Reimer and Zack Burling who each notched a season-high three hits. Reimer also scored three runs, while Williams and DeCook each finished with two runs.

The win is the first for the Leathernecks in 2014 and the first win over Evansville in program history. The 12 runs scored are the most for Leatherneck baseball since scoring 20 against Blackburn on April 20th of last season.

Game 2: Evansville 1, Western Illinois 0

The second game of the doubleheader was a nine-inning contest that saw the Leathernecks surrender just two hits to the Aces. Evansville was able to plate an early run, however, and hold the Leathernecks scoreless to earn the victory.

Leatherneck starter Tom Constand (0-2) threw 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run with seven strikeouts in the loss.

UE starter Cole Isom (1-0) recorded the win after throwing seven innings with seven hits allowed and two strikeouts. Matt Rodgers recorded the save for the Aces after throwing the final two innings with two strikeouts.

Evansville scored the lone run of the contest in the third inning. Jarod Perry led off the inning with a single for the Aces and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Perry then took advantage of two wild pitches to cross the plate.

The Leathernecks notched three hits in the fourth inning and had a runner advance to third, but a double play from the Aces ended the inning.

Western also had a runner reach third in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Evansville was able to get out of both jams to keep the Leathernecks off the scoreboard.

Glore ended the game 4-for-4 from the plate, which is a new career-high for the senior. Five other players recorded hits in the game for the Purple & Gold.

Evansville stranded 10 runners on base, while Western left eight on throughout the duration of the game.

Western will next be in action on Friday (Mar. 7) against Indiana State. The Leathernecks and Sycamores will meet in Terre Haute, Ind. for the three-game series.
