Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Five different Leathernecks scored at least 14 points apiece as Western Illinois defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee 99-86 inside the Klotsche Center on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 17).
Western Illinois won its third straight after dropping the season-opener, improving to 3-1, while Milwaukee falls to 0-2.
Marley Hall led the way with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Ashley Luke notched her third double-double of the season, totaling 17 points and 10 rebounds.
"I thought we played really well. That's a big road win against what I think will be a good team in the Horizon League," head coach JD Gravina said. "It's nice to win a game not just because we shot it well from the 3-point line. We really had a good inside-out threat, we attacked the basket well, and we got to the free throw line."
Michelle Maher (16 points), Tori Niemann (15) and Liz Skotowski (career-high 14) also scored in double-figures for Western.
Trailing 16-14 about five minutes in, a Skotowski 3-pointer sparked a 14-3 Western run, seven of the points scored by Luke, giving the Leathernecks a lead they never relented.
A Panther triple cut the Leatherneck lead to eight with 16:22 left in the game, but the Leathernecks connected on four straight layups and a Luke free throw to key a 9-0 run, making the score 61-44 at the 13:45 mark.
Milwaukee was unable to cut the margin back to single digits, never getting closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
"We played pretty good defense and they're a good offensive team," Gravina added. "I thought we overcame some things - got in early foul trouble and struggled from 3-point range, so we're pretty encouraged."
Rebecca Henricson had another strong game, totaling six points, six steals, five rebounds and six assists to just one turnover.
Off the bench, Sophie Reichelt added five points, five rebounds and two blocks.
In addition to her 15 points, Niemann totaled seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, while Maher pulled down four boards and notched five assists.
The Leathernecks took care of the ball for the second straight game, dishing out 20 assists while committing just nine turnovers. WIU forced 22 Panther turnovers.
Western Illinois shot 36-of-71 from the field (50.7 percent) and 7-of-27 from beyond the arc (25.9 percent), compared to 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) and 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) for Milwaukee.
The Leathernecks also got to the free throw line 40 times, sinking 20 of them (50 percent). UWM was 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the line.
