Leathernecks Drop First Summit League Game

MACOMB, Ill. - Dan Russell (3-3) took the hill for the Leathernecks on Friday but South Dakota State was able to create just enough offense to take the Summit league opener, 5-2, on Friday afternoon.

A sacrifice bunt in the top of the second inning allowed the Jackrabbits to go ahead, 1-0.

SDSU added on to its lead with two in the next inning. The inning started off with a single off the pitcher by Billy Stitz and was later cut down on a double play. Three straight hits including a two-RBI single from Eric Cain. After three inning the Jacks' led 3-0.

John Koszulinski singled down the right field line to begin the fourth inning. Bryan Jordan laced a single through the right side to advance the Leatherneck catcher. Austin Cowen drew a walk to load the bases. Tom Lilja answered the call with a single into left field. A wild pitch from SDSU starter Stephen Bougher (4-2) allowed Jordan to cross the for the second run of the inning.

A Jesse Sawyer double greeted Russell in the sixth inning and came around to score on a fielder's choice. A botched rundown in between first and second allowed the second run of the inning to score. Through six innings SDSU had a 5-2 lead and that would end up being the final score for the first Summit League game for both programs.

Russell loses his third game of the season despite going 8.0 innings and striking out six Jackrabbits. Chris Fuchs came into finish the game and did not allow a hit.

Koszulinski picked up two hits and scored a run on the afternoon. Lilja went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Bougher went 7.0 innings and allowed two earned runs while setting down four Leathernecks via the strikeout. Trever Vermeulen picked his second save of the season after going 2.0 innings and not allowing a hit.

Cain paced the Jackrabbits' offense as he drove in two runs and drew three walks.

The two teams will be back in action on Saturday with a scheduled doubleheader starting at noon. be sure to tune in the Rocky Vision broadcasts for both games starting at 11:45 a.m.
