MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Western Illinois men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat at Big East team Marquette, Saturday in the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Mandela Shepard and Alejandro Buceta came the closest to a win for Western as they fell 8-5 to Niko Boulieris and Jonathan Schwerin in No. 2 doubles play. Rodrigo Azevedo and James McGuire competed at the No. 3 doubles slot, but could not overcome the Golden Eagles' Drake Kakar and Otavio Perim as they fell 8-4. Jeff Cote and Patrick Hammers teamed up in No. 1 doubles play, falling to Mark Rutherford and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley, 8-2.
Cote also competed against Rutherford at the No. 1 singles flight, dropping each contest, 6-2. Gutierrez Crowley defeated Hammers, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 position, and Shepard and Buceta each suffered defeat by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
The Fighting Leatherneck men's tennis team resumes spring competition at 3 p.m., Sunday, January 24 at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
