Men's Tennis Drops Dual to Chicago State

Leathernecks close out season Sunday against Creighton

Box Score

MACOMB, Ill. -
The Western Illinois men's tennis team opened up its final weekend of competition Friday (April 15), as the Leathernecks hosted in-state foe Chicago State. Western gained a point by default but was unable to use the advantage, falling 6-1. WIU moves to 0-14 on the year while Chicago State improves to 3-19.

"Chicago State played a very competitive match today," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "It was good to see Nolan (Jones) play well. Each team member fought hard against their opponent but was unable to secure a victory."

Western opened doubles play with an early advantage, as the No. 3 match was conceded to the Leathernecks as Chicago State only had five players competing. WIU looked to take a match at No. 1 or 2 doubles to secure the team point but was unable to do so, falling 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.

In singles, WIU claimed a victory by default at the No. 6 position to even the score at 1-all. From there, however, the Cougars swept the final five matches in straight sets to secure the victory. Freshman Nolan Jones had the best showing out of the Purple and Gold, as he took on Christian Gonzalez at the No. 4 spot. Jones battled, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere, Nikola Pavlovic (No. 1) and Ross Smith (No. 5) dropped their respective matches by 6-1, 6-1 finals. Jacob Sanders fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 while Surya Sawhney out defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.

Western closes out the season this Sunday (April 17) as the team welcomes Creighton to town for a 10 a.m. match at the WIU Tennis Facility. Sunday's match will be senior day as the Leathernecks honor their three seniors, Kerry Nozum, Smith, and Pavlovic.
