Western Falls to Denver in Men’s Tennis

Leathernecks back in action on Sunday for third match in three days

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois men's tennis team was back in action Saturday (April 2) afternoon, as the Leathernecks faced Denver in Summit League action. WIU was unable to upset the No. 48 ranked Pioneers, falling 6-0. Western falls to 0-12 (0-4 Summit) while the Summit League favorite Pioneers move to 12-7 (1-0).
 
"Today's match was against one of the most competitive teams we have played this spring," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "We played to our potential but Denver was very good."

Doubles action kicked off Saturday's neutral site competition, where the Pioneers won the doubles point with 6-0 victories at No. 1 and 3. The No. 2 match went unfinished with the doubles point secured.
 
In singles action, the Purple and Gold battled, but were unable to secure a victory on the day. Nikola Pavlovic took to the top spot but fell at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1. Surya Sawhney dropped his No. 2 match (6-1, 6-1) and Ross Smith was unsuccessful at No. 3 (6-0, 6-2). Jacob Sanders (6-0, 6-2) and Christopher Nozum (6-2, 6-1) dropped their No. 4 and 5 matches and the No. 6 match featuring Brady Smith went to Denver, 6-1, 6-0.
 
Western now travels to Omaha for its third Summit League contest in as many days. First serve against the Mavs on Sunday (April 3) is set for 11 a.m.
