Leathernecks Fall on Senior Day

Three seniors honored as Western closes 2016 season

Box Score

MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois men's tennis team closed out the 2016 schedule Sunday (April 17) afternoon, as the Leathernecks faced Creighton in a nonconference dual. Nikola Pavlovic, Ross Smith, and Kerry Nozum were honored as part of Senior Day, but Western was unable to send the seniors out in style, falling 7-0.

Western looked like it would take an early lead in doubles play as the No. 1 tandem of Pavlovic and Surya Sawhney battled Harrison Lang and August Nysted. The duo would push Creighton to the wire, but ultimately drop a 7-5 decision. WIU's two other double teams couldn't get anything going as Creighton would take all three matches and the doubles point.

In singles play it was all Bluejays, as Creighton (7-9) swept all six matches in straight sets. Pavlovic went to the No.1 spot where he spent most of the year but fell, 6-1, 6-2. Sawhney (6-0, 6-1) and Smith (6-0, 6-0) were unsuccessful at No. 2 and 3 for Western. The No. 4, 5, and 6 players in the Purple and Gold lineup were unable to build any momentum, as Nolan Jones (6-1, 6-0), Jacob Sanders (6-0, 6-0), and Nozum (6-0, 6-1) all fell, respectively.

Western Illinois closes out the 2016 campaign with a 0-15 record and a 0-5 mark in Summit League play.
