Men's Tennis Falls to Illinois State in In-State Battle

WIU back on the courts for the first time in three weeks

Normal, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's team took to the courts for the first time in three weeks Saturday (March 26) afternoon, as the Leathernecks squared off against in-state foe Illinois State. The Redbirds got the best of Western, claiming a 7-0 decision. WIU falls to 0-10 on the year while Illinois State moves to 8-10 on the spring season.
 
"Our opponents competed well today and were very consistent," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "We played with passion but were not able to secure the victory."
 
Western was unable to get anything going in doubles action, falling in all three matches. The duos of Nikola Pavlovic/Surya Sawhney and Christopher Nozum/Brady Smith each fell by 6-2 finals in the No. 1 and 3 spots, respectively. The No. 2 team of Ross Smith and Nolan Jones dropped their set, 6-0.
 
In singles, it was a straight sweep by the Redbirds, as each match was claimed in straight sets. Pavlovic battled at the top spot, but dropped his No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-1. Jones fell at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1, and Kerry Nozum was defeated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. WIU's No. 2, 3, and 4 competitors each lost by 6-0, 6-0 margins.
 
The Purple and Gold hit the courts on Friday, April 1, for a Summit League contest at South Dakota State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Brookings.
