Men’s Tennis Falls at Omaha to Cap Roadtrip

Leathernecks back in action April 15 against Chicago State

OMAHA, Neb. – For the third time in as many days, the Western Illinois men's tennis team took to the courts for a Summit League contest. Sunday's (April 3) contest saw the Leathernecks in Omaha to face the Mavericks. WIU was unable to end the trip on a high note, falling 7-0 to Omaha. Western fell to 0-14 on the year and caps its Summit League portion of the schedule at 0-5.

"For our second outdoor match of the season we had to make some adjustments because of the conditions," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "All of our players had a chance to be in the lineup for our final Summit League match of the season."

In doubles action, the top duo of Nikola Pavlovic and Surya Sawhney took to the No. 1 spot, where they fell by a 6-0 final. Ross Smith and Jacob Sanders battled at No. 2 but dropped a 6-1 decision. Christopher Nozum and Brady Smith teamed up at No. 3, but fell 6-0.

Singles play saw Pavlovic battle at the No. 1 spot, but was forced to retire while trailing 4-3 in the first set due to an injury. Sawhey tried to get Western on the board at No. 2 but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-2. Ross Smith (6-2, 6-0), Nolan Jones (6-1, 6-1), and Nozum (6-1, 6-0) were unsuccessful at the No. 3, 4, and 5 spots. Sanders rounded out the competition at No. 6 singles where he fell by a 6-3, 6-1 final.

The Leathernecks now return home for the final two contests of the regular season. Western will host Chicago State on Friday, April 15, before facing Creighton on Sunday, April 17, for Senior Day.
