Leatherneck Baseball Building Momentum Heading Into 2026 Season

MACOMB,Ill.- Western Illinois baseball heads into the 2026 campaign with continuity, added strength throughout the roster, and a pitching staff that looks deeper than it has in recent years. The steady progress under head coach Terry Davis has created a group that blends veteran leadership with new impact pieces, giving the Leathernecks optimism as they prepare for another grind through Ohio Valley Conference play.

That momentum hasn't gone unnoticed. In its 2026 OVC Season Preview, D1Baseball highlighted the competitiveness of the league and pointed to programs like WIU that are working to close the gap and challenge established contenders.

Veteran Presence Fuels the Lineup

Western Illinois returns a seasoned core of hitters, led by fifth-year senior Liam Bushey. After batting .340 with a .436 on-base percentage a year ago, Bushey remains a key middle-of-the-order bat and one of the team's most physical offensive threats.

Fellow fifth-year senior Krayton Morse provides consistency both offensively and defensively. The experienced catcher hit .328 last season and continues to be a steady presence behind the plate, guiding the pitching staff while anchoring the lineup.

Senior outfielder Paul Osting brings energy and leadership that extends beyond the box score. Reaching base at a .404 clip last season, Osting's plate discipline, speed, and competitiveness make him a tone-setter at the top of the order.

Strength Up the Middle

Sophomore Kenny Perez emerged as a reliable contributor during his freshman season and solidified himself as a cornerstone up the middle. After hitting .268 while handling shortstop duties, Perez gives WIU defensive stability with room to grow offensively.

In the outfield, fifth-year senior Tyler Large returns as one of the team's primary power threats. His six home runs led returning players, and his combination of athleticism and strength gives the Leathernecks another dangerous bat.

Newcomers Add Impact Potential

Western Illinois also welcomes several transfers expected to make an immediate difference. Senior Dante Turgeon, who previously played at Arizona State and Stephen F. Austin, brings size and raw power that could translate into run production right away.

Redshirt sophomore Joe Connolly, a transfer from Saint Louis, adds speed and athleticism. His ability to pressure defenses on the bases could give WIU another dynamic element in the lineup.

Pitching Staff Shows Growth

On the mound, senior righthander Max Tripure returns as an experienced weekend option after taking on a significant workload last season. His durability and ability to consistently attack the zone provide stability at the front of the rotation.

Senior Eric Rawlings could see an expanded role after an impressive year out of the bullpen, where he posted a 3.74 ERA. With a fastball that reaches the mid-90s, Rawlings has the tools to become a major contributor in longer outings.

Improved depth across the staff gives the Leathernecks more flexibility and internal competition than in past seasons — a key factor in navigating conference play.

Bullpen Could Be a Difference-Maker

The bullpen features multiple veterans capable of handling high-leverage innings. Billy Humphrey brings power stuff and late-game experience, while lefty Jason Buhl offers a different look with an effective off-speed mix. Karsten Stotlar, a 6-foot-5 lefthander, adds another experienced option in key situations.

With defined roles and another year of development, this group has the potential to keep games close and give WIU a chance late.

Outlook for 2026

As noted in D1Baseball's 2026 OVC season preview, the conference race is expected to be tightly contested. Western Illinois may still be in building mode, but the combination of veteran leadership, developing young talent, and added depth gives the Leathernecks the pieces to be more competitive across the board.

Expect WIU to play with more confidence, toughness, and consistency as the program continues its upward climb in the OVC.
