MACOMB, IL- Western Illinois wrapped up its 2025 cross country season with a strong performance at the NCAA Midwest Regionals on one of the most demanding courses the teams faced all year. The hilly layout tested runners from start to finish, causing several competitors from other programs to be unable to finish. Despite the difficult conditions, the Leathernecks pushed through and delivered their best combined team finishes in a long time.
On the men's side, Western Illinois posted its first team score at an NCAA Regionals since 2018, breaking a 13-year stretch and marking a major step forward for the program. The group battled the steep climbs and challenging terrain, staying composed and delivering the solid team finish for the Leathernecks.Â
The women's team also made history of its own, scoring as a team at the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2012. Their performance showcased the progress made throughout the 2025 season, as the roster continued to compete with consistency and toughness even on one of the most difficult courses in the region.
With the regional meet marking the end of the 2025 season, both Leatherneck programs closed the year on a high note. Overcoming a grueling course and recording their strongest team results in years highlights the growth, determination and momentum the teams built this fall. Western Illinois now turns its attention to carrying this progress into the 2026 campaign.
