Grunert Sets New Program Record in Pole Vault

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- While cool, blustery conditions may have hindered some, Western Illinois pole vaulter Arnie Grunert found the weather and temperatures much to his liking at Iowa's Musco Invitational on Saturday.

After breaking his school record in the pole vault last week, Grunert bested even himself, setting another new standard for the program with a vault of 17 feet, 4.5 inches. The vault topped his record-breaker last week by 9.25 inches. The effort is also the 24th-best pole vault performance in NCAA men's Division Track and Field this season.

Grunert had no difficulties setting the new record, clearing the height of 17-04.5 in his first attempt. The day belonged to the sophomore as he cleared the program-record height of 16-11 in his first effort as well. He followed that up by nailing 17-01.5 on his second attempt. Grunert's new best also puts him atop the Ohio Valley Conference leaderboard in the event.

Pole vault success carried over to the women's event as Emma Ponx finished second (11-09.75), Paulina Lucer third (11-09.75), Colleen Johnson (11.03.75) fourth and Dana Surwillo (11-03.75) fifth.

Also in the field, Jasmine Stokes had a strong weekend. On Friday, the senior finished fifth in the hammer throw with a best of 171-01. On Saturday, Stokes had another solid effort, finishing eighth in the discus with a 128-10.

In the javelin, Cadence Stanley finished second with a best throw of 104-06.

In the men's long jump, Toriano Tate needed one leap to earn second. After a foul on his first leap, Tate went 22-07.75 on his second, finishing the event in second overall. Cage Davison leaped 21-09.5, finishing fourth.

In the women's long jump, Ashley Thomas and Briza Dure finished fourth and fifth. Thomas had a best of 17-00.5 while Dure went 16-11.25, respectively.

In the women's triple jump, Kelsey Hutchins set a new personal best, winning the event with a finish of 36-09.

On the track, Logan Lommel led the way for Western Illinois. The senior scored another gold, finishing first in the 1500. Lommel led the bulk of the race, finishing in 3:58.14.

In the women's 1500, Madison Trevena finished eighth overall in 4:49.63.

Distances served WIU well. Kayden Gilmore also had a podium spot, running a season-best 10:51.67, finishing second overall in the 3000.

In the men's 200, Lucas Burmeister found himself on the podium, finishing third overall. Burmeister covered the track at Iowa in 22.29. Jaiden Young was seventh in the event, finishing in 22.69.

In the men's 400, Isaac Jones had a solid performance, finishing fourth overall in 49.9
