MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois track and field teams delivered a series of strong performances this weekend at the Big Blue Classic, hosted by Eastern Illinois, highlighted by multiple event victories and top-three finishes.
On Friday, the Leathernecks saw solid efforts in the sprints and field events. Janelle Marshall opened the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.5), while Mya Hippolyte led the way in the 200 meters with a third-place time of 24.82. Nyla Norman added a sixth-place finish in the same event (25.55), and Kenneth Cooley placed fourth on the men's side (21.94).
In the field events, Rayvon Wright recorded a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a mark of 14.38 meters. Kelsey Hutchins (11.38m) and Nakeita Kessling (11.28m) followed with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
Saturday was highlighted by a pair of victories in the pole vault and distance events. Dana Surwillo claimed first place in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.71 meters, while Colleen Johnson finished third (3.56m). On the men's side, Nino Romeo placed eighth (3.95m).
In the long jump, Toriano Tate (7.02m) and Cage Davison (6.95m) secured fourth- and fifth-place finishes.
The Leathernecks dominated the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sweeping both titles. Lily Patterson captured the women's title in 12:00.76, followed by Cassie Brushaber in third (12:25.24). Eason Comer added a victory on the men's side, crossing in 9:48.46.
In the 1,500 meters, Ellie Eastman placed 10th (5:01.15), while Marissa Shute finished 14th (5:19.46).
Sprint performances continued to shine, as Hippolyte returned with a fourth-place finish in the 100 meters (12.23), followed by Rhianna Davis in sixth (12.43). Cooley added a ninth-place finish on the men's side (11.03).
The 800 meters proved to be a strong event for Western Illinois, led by Finley Hancock, who captured the title in 2:20.50. Krissy Petrou (2:23.95) and Linnea Bloom (2:25.31) followed with second- and third-place finishes, respectively. Jayda Stewart placed fourth (2:26.41), and Caley Murphy added a sixth-place finish (2:32.80).
In the 400 meters, Jolena Site and Zearra Milburn both clocked times of 59.46 to finish sixth and seventh, while Alyssa Adeoti placed eighth (1:00.06). Marshall added a ninth-place finish (1:00.74).
The women's 4x400-meter relay team capped the meet with a fourth-place finish, posting a time of 4:01.38.
Western Illinois will look to build on its momentum heading into its next meet at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational held at Indiana State.Â
