WIU Track and Field Has Strong Outdoor Opener

Lommel sets new record; WIU women second at Redbird Challenge

MACOMB – After a strong indoor season, the Western Illinois track and field team kept the momentum rolling in the opening weekend of the outdoor season, participating in a pair of meets.

On Thursday at the Washington University Distance Carnival, Logan Lommel picked up where he left off from the indoor season. In his first event of the season on Thursday night, Lommel put himself atop the program record list once again, winning the 3000 steeplechase in a new program outdoor record time of 8:58.10. Lommel trailed heading into the last lap but in the final 100 meters, put on an epic performance, taking the event title to go along with his program record. Lommel's time also puts him in contention for an NCAA West Region berth. To qualifier, a runner must have run a top 48 time among teams in the regional.

For the women at Washington U, Maleigha Huston led the way, finishing ninth in the 800. Huston covered the course in 2:12.93. Aylana Cezar also gave the Leatherneck women a top-10 performance at the Distance Carnival, finishing the women's 3000 steeplechase in 10:54.02, good for 10th. 

The Leathernecks also had a strong performance at the Redbird Challenge. The Western Illinois women led the way, finishing second as a team, scoring 145 points. The WIU men finished fourth with 51.5 points.

Jasmine Stokes set the tone for the weekend, winning the women's hammer throw on Friday. Stokes had a personal-best effort of 168 feet, nine inches. Stokes' performance places her 10th in the program's indoor record book for the event

The women's field events, most notably the long jump, were the day's story on Saturday. In the long jump, WIU had four athletes score points. Aliyah Adams won the event with a best effort of 19-02.75. Renee Raglin was third with an 18-04.5 and Nakeita Kesling was right behind Raglin in fourth with a best of 18-00.25. Briza Dure added a sixth, leaping a personal-best 17-09.00.

Not to be outdone, the WIU women's pole vault crew had points from four different athletes. Emma Ponx led the way, finishing second overall with a best of 12-04.75. The effort was the second-best in program history. Dana Surwillo also vaulted her way onto the podium and into the record book with an 11-07.00, good for third overall and eighth-best for the program. Paulina Lucer also cleared 11-07, finishing fifth and Colleen Johnson was sixth with an 11-01.00, now the ninth-best for WIU outdoor women's track and field.

In the triple jump, Adams took home more honors, winning the event with a best of 39-07.25.  Kesling was sixth with a 36-07.5 and Ashley Thomas also scored points, finishing eighth with a 35-11.25.

In the javelin throw, Cadence Stanley also scored points with a personal-best 108-09, which was good for sixth.

The men's field eventers also had a strong meet, with the long jump leading the way. Toriano Tate finished third with a best effort of 22-11.75. Cage Davison was right behind him, finishing fourth with a best of 22-09.75.

In the men's triple jump, a pair of Leathernecks also scored points. Alessandro Belluz finished second with a 46-07.25. Tate added an eighth-place finish, leaping 41-01.5.
Belluz added more hardware and points, finishing third in the high jump, clearing 6-04.75.

Matthew Thomas added a seventh in the javelin, with a seventh-place effort of 122-09.

On the track, WIU was just as impressive.

The women's 4x100 team of Raglin, Adams, Briza Dure, and Savannah Harvey ran the 10th fastest time in program history, winning the event in 47.19.

In the 100 finals, three WIU sprinters scored. Dure had a PR of 12.15, finishing second, Harvey was third with 12.23, and Raglin was sixth with 12.37. Dure was not done, winning the 200 with a time of 25.51, giving her a third podium appearance.

Multiple scorers highlighted the women's 400 as three WIU sprinters scored points. Passion Crews led the way, finishing third in 57.9. Monique Remy was right behind her in fourth with a personal record time of 58.11. Zwandi Harrison added more points, finishing seventh in 59.1.

In her Western Illinois debut, Sophia Myers, tied for the third-fastest 100 hurdles time in program history, running a 13.89. Myers' time was good for second overall.

WIU also scored in the 400 hurdles. Kaytlyn Baker was fourth in 1:10.84 and Bailey Boddicker was seventh in 1:12.40.

In the women's 4x400, the group of Dure, Crews, Kesling, and Site finished second overall in 3:58.17.

The men also had a strong day on the track. 

In the finals of the 100, Malachi Barendilla finished fourth overall in 10.77. In the men's 1500, Sean Hudspath was able to score points for the Leathernecks, finishing fifth in 3:59.10. Hudspath also added a seventh in the 800, finishing in 1:57.21. Matthew Thomas also scored on the track, finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles, clocking in with a time of 15.41. 

In the final event of the night, the men's 4x400 team of Hudspath, Jeremie Bokata, Richard Brown, and John Hunt finished third in 3:35.47.


The WIU track and field team is next in action April 13 at the SIUE Cougar Classic.
