Men's and Women's 4x400 teams lead the way

CHICAGO, Ill. – It was a successful start to the indoor track and field season for the Western Illinois men's and women's teams on Friday as the Leathernecks brought home plenty of gold from the Purdue Northwest Collegiate Invitational held in Chicago.

Overall, WIU captured firsts in five events as a small, but mighty roster left an impression on the field.

In the 4x400, both the Leatherneck men and women took home titles as the men ran the event in three minutes, 21.23 seconds and the women's squad covered the track in 3:51.71.

The foursome of Jaiden Young, Isaac Jones, Malachi Barendilla and Caleb Ware nearly found their way into the top-10 all-time 4x400 indoor relay team times while the grouping of Nakeita Kessling, Briza Dure, Passion Crews and Aliyah Adams find themselves third all-time on the WIU women's 4x400 indoor record book. The relay team is only 1.5 seconds behind the program's all-time mark.

Jones added to his big day, finishing second in the men's 800, running the race in 1:54.63. Jones was only bested by teammate Logan Lommel, who won the event in 1:53.61.

Lommel's time is now the eighth-fastest men's indoor 800 in program history.

Also shining in the 800 and taking home a title was Maleigha Huston. Huston won the women's 800 in 2:18.31.

The Western Illinois women also had a pair of podium finishes in the 400 as Kessling once again found herself at the top of medal stand, winning the event in 57.01. Crews was right behind her, finishing second in 57.10.

Kessling's time puts her fifth in the women's all-time record book while Crews' effort lands her sixth all-time for the women's program.

Also scoring big points for the women as individuals were Adams and Dure, who finished second and fourth in the women's 200. Adams' time of 25.44 is eighth-best in women's program indoor history. Dure's 25.62 is the 11th fastest for the program.

Western Illinois is next in action on Saturday, traveling to Iowa City to run in the Jimmy Grant Alumni Invitational.
