WIU looks to add to record book

MACOMB – The Leatherneck track and field teams compete at the Larry Wieczorek Invite on Friday and Saturday this weekend in Iowa City. This is Iowa's premier meet of the season, giving Western Illinois the chance to compete against many of the top teams in the country. The American Track League (professional track & field circuit) is hosting a competition in conjunction with the college invitational. That event showcases some of the best professional track & field athletes in the United States.

With great competition the Leathernecks look to add more top-10 and school-record performances to the all-time record book. Thus far in the 2022-2023 season, the men's and women's team have achieved 11 total Top-10 marks.

"Potential school records that could be taken down this weekend include: Arnie Grunert in the pole vault, Richard Brown and Lucas Hofer in the 600 / 800 double and Logan Lommel in the mile / 3,000 double," coach Trey Brokaw said. "Arnie had some great attempts at the school record height last weekend. Lucas, Richard and Logan have been a successful core of leaders for our team the past few years. It should be exciting to see how the weekend unfolds for everyone."

2023 Indoor Top-10 All-Time Season Performances to Date:

Arnie Grunert, Pole Vault #2

Lucas Hofer, 600 Meters #2

Logan Lommel, Mile #3

Isaac Jones, 600 Meters #6

Richard Brown, 1000 Meters #8

Lucas Burmeister, 60 Meters #10

Olin Ortiz, 3000 Meters #10

Emma Ponx, Pole Vault #5

Nakeita Kessling, Long Jump #5

Paulina Lucer, Pole Vault #7

Aliyah Adams, Long Jump #10

"Our team is very excited to compete this weekend up at Iowa. This meet will have a conference championship feel. With half the events being Friday and the other half on Saturday many student-athletes will double or triple in preparation for conference in five weeks," coach Brokaw said. "I believe our crew is ready to represent the W well across all of the event groups."
