Leathernecks Unable To Rally In Senior Day Double Header

Western Illinois scored late runs in both outings but wasn’t able to make a comeback in either matchup.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (4-17, 6-38) honored six seniors during the final Summit League matchup of the season at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The Leathernecks battled hard in both contests versus Northern Colorado (8-13, 12-32), but the Bears took both matchups, winning game one 11-10, and game two 7-4.

Game One: Northern Colorado 11 | Western Illinois 10

The Bears used the long ball in the first two innings to jump out to a big lead in game one. A three-run home run in the first and grand slam in the second gave Northern Colorado a 7-0 through two innings.

Despite the early deficit, Western Illinois answered with a four-run third inning to get back in the game. WIU loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, single, and walk, and Kory Olsen drove in the first Leatherneck run on a sacrifice fly. A walk from Jack Sievers loaded the bases once again, and CJ Richmond drove in a run on another walk to make the score 7-2. Toby Allred got on with an infield single, and an error on the same play by Northern Colorado allowed Western Illinois to score two runs and cut the deficit to three.

The Bears responded right away in the top of the fourth. An error and pair of singles loaded the bases with no outs for Northern Colorado. The Bears opted to use the small ball technique with back-to-back sacrifice flies to score two runs to take a 9-4 lead. Jackson Hugus cut the Bears' lead down to four in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to left.

Northern Colorado put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the fifth and managed to score two runs due to mistakes by Western Illinois. A throwing error on a steal attempt scored the first run of the inning, and a wild pitch later brought in Northern Colorado's second run to take an 11-5 lead.

Richmond hit the second home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth, crushing a ball to dead center for his third home run of the year. Allred followed that up with a double and scored on a single to left from Hugus to make the score 11-7.

Dillon Sears got things started in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double and scored soon after on a double from Olsen. A single from Sievers and a walk from Richmond loaded the bases with no outs, giving the Leathernecks an opportunity to tie or take the lead. Allred reached on an error to get Western Illinois back within two, and a fielder's choice RBI from Derek Botaletto made it a one-run game. WIU loaded the bases later in the inning on a walk from Chase VanDerGinst but back-to-back strikeouts got Northern Colorado out of the jam. Western Illinois never had another runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game, giving Northern Colorado game one.

Jackson Hugus was a big contributor in his seventh start of the year, going 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Hugus' home run is the first of his career. Kory Olsen finished 2-4 with a pair of RBIs, and a run scored. Toby Allred also had a two-hit day with an RBI. CJ Richmond went 1-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs for his third multi-RBI game of the year.

Jack Bell had another amazing outing out of the bullpen, tying his career-high with four innings pitched, allowing no runs, and striking out four.

Game Two: Northern Colorado 7 | Western Illinois 4

Northern Colorado struck early once again in game two. After a walk and single gave them runners at the corners, a double, and a two-run home run gave the Bears a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Chandler Fochs kept the Bears off the board over the next three innings, but a defensive mistake gave Northern Colorado a key run in the fifth. A walk and single put two runnes on, and back-to-back errors by WIU scored a run to give Northern Colorado a 4-0 lead.

The Leathernecks got the offense going in the bottom half of the fifth. After a leadoff walk from Toby Allred and a single from Adam Juran, Max Slavens dropped a beautiful bunt down the third baseline for a bunt single to load the bases. Allred scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to get Western Illinois on the board.

A bases-loaded walk allowed Northern Colorado to get the run back in the top of the sixth, and a two-out single to right brought in another run for the Bears to give them a 6-1 advantage.

A dropped pop-up in the bottom of the sixth allowed Kory Olsen to reach safely, which eventually helped WIU score two runs in the inning. After a single from CJ Richmond, Jackson Hugus smashed a double to the left-field corner to easily score Olsen to make the score 6-2. Allred scored Richmond on a groundout too short to cut the Bears' lead down to three.

Northern Colorado managed to score a run in the eighth, using three singles to get their lead back to four. Nick Mitchell brought in a run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but Northern Colorado got a big strikeout to avoid a late comeback.

CJ Richmond had another great day at the plate in game two, going 2-4 with a run scored. Nick Mitchell went 2-4 with an RBI to bring his season total to 24. Mitchell also finished with a stolen base to give him 25 steals on the season, which ranks eighth all-time in a single season in program history.

Western Illinois will be back in action on Tuesday (May 10) for the final home game of the season against Eastern Illinois. First pitch against the Panthers is set for 3 p.m.
