Baseball Drops Home Finale To Eastern Illinois

Western Illinois will finish off the year with seven straight road games.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (6-39) couldn't maintain a late one-run lead in its final home matchup against the Eastern Illinois Panthers (30-15). Western Illinois took the lead with a four-run seventh inning, but Eastern Illinois answered with two runs in the eighth to win the contest by a final score of 7-6.

CJ Richmond got the scoring going with a bang, pulling a home run over the right-field wall for a two-run homer to give WIU a 2-0 lead in the second.

Eastern Illinois managed to grab the lead in the top of the third thanks to a three-run inning. A walk and single put runners on the corners, and a sacrifice fly gave the Panthers their first run of the afternoon. EIU followed that up with back-to-back doubles to right to score two more runs and take a 3-2 lead. A hit by pitch, walk, and single loaded the bases for Eastern Illinois in the fifth, and back-to-back singles scored another two runs to put Eastern Illinois up 5-2.

WIU managed just two hits through the first six innings but got a rally going in the seventh to take the lead. A pinch-hit single from Jack Sievers gave Western Illinois a much-needed baserunner, and Derek Botaletto advanced Sievers to third on a single to right. Adam Juran hit a high pop-up near first that the Panthers failed to catch, giving him a single to load the bases. Matt Santarelli drew a walk during the next at-bat to drive in the first run of the inning. Next man up Max Slavens scored a run on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error by EIU on the same play brought another man home, allowing WIU to tie the game. Dillon Sears capped off the four-run seventh with a single to right to give Western Illinois a 6-5 lead.

Eastern Illinois responded quickly by loading the bases in the eighth, and a single to right-center easily scored two runs to put Eastern Illinois back ahead 7-6. Jack Bell managed to keep it a one-run game with a pair of strikeouts. Western Illinois only managed a single in the final two innings of offense, giving Eastern Illinois the one-run victory.

CJ Richmond hit his second home run in three days to bring his total to four on the season, and finish the game 1-3 with a pair of RBIs and a walk. Matt Santarelli made his 19th start of the season and finished 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. Matt Slavens filled in nicely in the leadoff spot, going 1-4 with an RBI, run scored, and a walk.

Jake Armstrong gave the Leathernecks a great performance out of the bullpen, allowing no runs in 2.2 innings and finishing with three strikeouts.

Western Illinois will finish the remainder of the season on the road, beginning with a three-game series against Murray State from Friday (May 13) through Sunday (May 15). First pitch for Friday's matchup is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
