Leathernecks fall at Murray State

Botaletto with two hits, two RBI

MURRAY, Kent. – The Leathernecks opened their three-game, non-conference road trip on Friday with a loss to Murray State, falling 9-3.
The loss drops Western Illinois to 6-40 overall.
The Leathernecks fell behind 3-0 after three innings, but in the fourth, two-out magic would see WIU draw even.
With two down, Gage Cruz would walk, Jack Sievers would reach on an error and CJ Richmond would get hit by a pitch.
With the bases loaded, Derek Botaletto singled to center, plating Cruz and Sievers.
Adam Juran followed with a double to right, tying the game and scoring Richmond.
The Racers would take the lead for good in the next half inning, scoring a single run.
The game would remain 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth when a three-run home run gave Murray State some insurance runs.
The Racers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Botaletto led the WIU offense with two hits and two RBI.
Chandler Fochs pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and five walks while striking out six.
Jack Bell pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs while striking out a pair.
The two teams square off in the second game of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
