Baseball Battles Bradley For Mid-week Matchup

Western Illinois baseball travels to Peoria, Ill., for another in-state matchup with rival Bradley University. The Leathernecks and the Braves meet up at Dozer Park on Tuesday (May 3) at 6 p.m.
 
Headlines
  • Western Illinois took one of its three matchups over the weekend in the first conference matchup versus the St. Thomas Tommies. The Leathernecks run-ruled St. Thomas 11-1 in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
  • Nick Mitchell had a career performance in the victory, going 4-5 with his first career home run and a career-high three RBIs. Mitchell finished the series 6-12 with four RBIs. His four-hit outing is the third time a Leatherneck has ended a game with four hits on the year. 
  • Mitchell extended his team-leading hitting and on-base streaks over the weekend. Mitchell owns WIU's longest hitting streak of the season now at 10 games and on-base streak of 20 games.
  • Dillon Sears and Kory Olsen also had big weekends in St. Paul. Olsen went 5-11 at the plate with three doubles in the three-game series. Olsen had his best performance of the season in the second game of the doubleheader, setting a new season-high with three hits and two doubles. Sears batted 4-10 against the Tommies with a double and two RBIs in WIU's 11-1 victory.
  • Chandler Fochs earned his second victory of the season after pitching all seven innings in the Leathernecks' win over St. Thomas, allowing just an unearned run and surrendering zero walks. The junior right-hander has allowed just one walk over his last four starts.
  • Western Illinois was swinging for the fences in its 11-1 win, hitting three home runs in the ball game. Adam Juran got WIU going with a solo home run in the fifth for his third of the season. Later in the inning, Mitchell hit his first career homer for a two-run shot. Gage Cruz put Western Illinois ahead by 10 with his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the seventh.
  • Tuesday's matchup versus Bradley will be the first meeting since 2019. The Leathernecks battled the Braves twice in the 2019 season but fell in both matchups. The Leathernecks look for their first win against Bradley since 2012.
Scouting The Opposition | Bradley enters the matchup on a four-game losing streak, suffering a 9-6 loss at home last Tuesday (April 27) to Illinois, and dropping all three games over the wekend to Evansville. The Braves are 13-24 overall on the year and 5-7 in the Missouri Valley. Connor O'Brien has been the Braves' top hitter on the season, hitting .407 with 59 total hits, 11 doubles, nine home runs, and 35 RBIs.

On Deck | Western Illinois is back at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against Northern Colorado. The series begins Friday (May 6) at 3 p.m. Sunday will be a special day for Leatherneck baseball as they honor their seniors for senior day.
