Headlines
  • Western Illinois is coming off its second win of the season on Wednesday (March 16), defeating in-state rival SIU-Edwardsville 18-11. The Leathernecks fell behind 4-0 early but used a seven-run third inning to get going offensively. After SIUE tied the game at seven, a five-run fifth and four-run eighth allowed WIU to create separation and hold on for the big offensive victory.
  • The Leatherneck's big day at the plate makes it the second time they've surpassed ten runs in a game this season. The 18 run performance makes it the first time since March 2019 versus Iowa Wesleyan that Western Illinois scored 15 plus runs.
  • Jack Bell earned his first career win versus the Cougars, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run, three hits, and struck out one batter.
  • Kyle Rosenfeld had a great final two innings for WIU, allowing no runs, one hit, and striking out five of the eight batters he faced to secure the win.
  • Fifth-year senior Dillon Sears had a career game at the plate in Edwardsville, ending with a career-high four hits and career-high four RBIs in the game. Sears now leads Western Illinois with 10 RBIs on the season.
  • Jackson Hugus also had a memorable performance versus SIUE. The freshman played his fifth game of the season and went 2-3 with a double, a run scored, and four RBIs.
  • Kory Olsen continued his hot hitting with another two-hit performance. Olsen has a hit in six straight games for WIU and at least one in 14 of 15 games. Olsen raised his batting average to .367 on Wednesday, good for the fourth-best in the Summit League.
  • The series between Western Illinois and Northern Colorado serves as the opening games to Summit League play for the 2022 season. After joining the Summit League from the Western Athletic Conference, Northern Colorado will play in its first conference games as a member of the Summit League.
Scouting the Opposition | Northern Colorado enters the series 3-14 overall but on a two-game winning streak. The Bears are coming off a four-game series versus Mount Marty College, where they won two of the four contests. After dropping both doubleheader games on March 12, the Bears rebounded and won both doubleheader games the next day, 9-8 and 6-3. Josh Glenn has been Northern Colorado's best hitter this season. The redshirt senior is batting .283 and leads the team with three home runs and 13 RBIs.

Probable Starters | Friday: Jack Carberry versus Ian Torpey | Saturday: Jace Warkentien versus Iain Isdale | Sunday: Brian Raymond versus Riley Bost

On Deck | Western Illinois will play their first power five opponent of the 2022 season as they take on the Minnesota Gophers. The Leathernecks will play a three-game series at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., March 25-27.
