Fochs Tosses Complete Game Shutout, WIU Routes SLU 11-0

Chandler Fochs threw a complete game shutout to even the series at Saint Louis on Saturday (March 13).

SAINT LOUIS - After falling in three consecutive walk-offs, Chandler Fochs put an end to the setbacks for Western Illinois (3-8) in an 11-0 victory over Saint Louis (3-11) on Saturday (March 13).

"We got a special outing from Chandler Fochs today," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "He had all of his pitches working with great poise through the whole game. What makes it better is he wasn't supposed to start until tomorrow but 90 minutes before first pitch we had to go with Jace Warkentien getting scratched today - he came to us wanting the ball this afternoon.

"We came out swinging again early on, which is good to see. Have to give their starter credit because he settled in and kept us off balance before we had our huge inning. Our guys responded well after another heartbreaker last night"

Fochs (2-1) tossed a complete-game shutout to even the series en route to his second win of the season and snap the three-game skid for the Leathernecks. His performance set a career-high in innings as he limited SLU to five hits with three strikeouts. The last 'Neck to throw a complete-game shutout was Aaron Michel vs. Fort Wayne in 2014.

Once again, the Western offense jumped out on top right away for a 2-0 lead as the offense has scored 16 runs this season in the first and second inning combined. Back-to-back doubles from Kevin Raisbeck and Trenton Bauer scored the first, and a Dillon Sears second inning single rounded out the quick start.

The leadoff double to start the game for Raisbeck continued his nine-game on-base streak. He tied the all-time mark of 27 games in 2019 set by current graduate assistant coach Adam Mcginnis in the 2017 season.

WIU then exploded for a five-run eighth led by a Tyler Estes two-out bases-clearing double to increase the advantage to 7-0. The 3 RBI tied his career-high he set last week at Evansville as the five-run frame also tied the season-high.

The Purple and Gold weren't done and tacked on four more in the ninth. Singles from Alex Dorethy and Chase VanDerGinst, followed by a bases-loaded walk, gave the Leathernecks its season-high in runs (11) and tied RBI (10).

The rubber match is set for tomorrow (March 14) at 1 p.m.
