Western Women’s Soccer Completes Weekend Sweep

After winning 1-0 on Friday, the team marched into Tulsa and left as 2-1 winners.

TULSA, OKLA. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team played on Sunday (Oct. 23), defeating the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 2-1 at the Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla.

With a starting lineup that featured the likes of Bridget Schuler, Emmy Ellington and Cassidy Grunewald, Amy Andrews opened the game's scoring just over 13 minutes into the game. After receiving a ball in the middle of the offensive half of the field, Natalie Nagle made a short pass to Jenna Lundgren who played a long ball over the top of the Golden Eagle defense. Waiting in the box was Andrews, who let the ball bounce once and fired a rocket to the lower right hand corner of the net to give Western a one goal lead. Andrews' goal was her tenth this season and the 24th of her WIU career, both of which tie a record for the most in program history.

In the 25th minute, it was Angie Knies who doubled the Leatherneck lead. Stepping over a free kick on the edge of the attacking third, she unleashed a rocket from over 30 yards out that soared into the top corner of the goal and doubled Western's lead. The goal was Knies' first as a Leatherneck, and the 2-0 advantage held until the halftime horn sounded. At half, WIU led the game in several statistical categories, outshooting ORU 5-2 (3-1 on goal), taking two corner kicks and drawing nine fouls.

The Golden Eagles got one back in the second half, scoring in the 72nd minute, but the lead held and Western was ahead when the final horn sounded. The Leathernecks are now 9-6-1 on the season with two games remaining.

17 Leathernecks combined to take 11 shots (five on goal) and four corner kicks, while drawing 12 fouls. The defense baited the Oral Roberts offense into seven offside calls, while Isabel Navas Rodriguez made three saves on 12 shots faced. Navas Rodriguez, Zoe Clarke, Bridget Schuler and Natalie Nagle all played the full 90 minutes as the freshman duo of Kayla Turner and Leah Ahlers both made their 16th appearance on the season; Emmy Ellington made her 15th appearance, also in her first season at Western.

Women's soccer returns to Macomb next weekend for matchups with the North Dakota schools. The first match against North Dakota State is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 29).
