Andrews Breaks Two WIU Records in 4-1 Victory

The team moves to 10-6-1 with one regular season game remaining.

MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team played on Friday (Oct. 29), defeating the North Dakota State Bison 4-1 at the Northwest Field on WIU's Macomb campus. With the win, Western reaches double-digit victories for the first time since 2012.

"I feel really good about the result. This was a big weekend – we knew we needed to get two results, especially at home, and we wanted to make a statement on senior weekend," associate head coach Josee Primeau said. "Having the girls show up the way they did showed that they took practice this week seriously and they came out ready to prove something."

The Bison struck early, catching the defense off guard and taking a one goal advantage in the 14th minute. That lead, however, didn't last long.

In the 19th minute Zoe Clarke played a ball from the back line out wide to Amy Andrews, who cut through the defense on to her favored right foot and put her shot into the top of the net and tying the game at one apiece.

"Honestly, I don't think - I just naturally do it," Andrews said of the goal. "I knew I had two players on me, there was a gap and I saw the space, so I shot and luckily it went top bin."

After Bridget Schuler volleyed in a Kayla Turner cross in the 29th minute and a Leah Ahlers 20-yard screamer in the 39th, Western Illinois held a 3-1 advantage after the game's first 45 minutes. Western led the first period in shots 10-6, taking two corners and drawing three fouls while forcing the Bison 'keeper to make four saves.

Western kept pushing in the second half, and were rewarded in the 84th minute with Jenna Lundgren drawing a penalty. Lundgren stepped over the ball and made the 'keeper guess wrong, extending the Leatherneck lead to 4-1. Neither team would score in the remaining six minutes, and WIU won the game.

"We kind of fell asleep on that first goal that NDSU had against us. We were disconnected and didn't communicate well in the back but the way the girls bounced back, played simple, played what they gave us and exploited their weaknesses in the back worked out well for us," Primeau said. "I think their ability to stay positive and keep the ball moving led to the result today."

19 players received minutes, and the team combined for 19 shots (11 on goal) while drawing eight Bison fouls and taking three corner kicks. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made five saves, bringing her season total to 77 through 17 appearances.

With the goal today, Amy Andrews broke two program records for goal scoring. Prior to this season, the most goals ever scored in one season was ten, a record set by Amanda Wandtke during the 2001 season. The previous record holder for career goals was Ashley Hoch, who scored 24 goals in a Leatherneck uniform from 2005-08. With her 19th minute goal today, Andrews scored her 11th on the year and 25th in her career.

"I'm happy to get the win but obviously I was hoping to break the record as well. I was trying not to think about it too much but I'm over the moon, it's incredible," Andrews said.

"Coaching Amy is awesome. She works really hard," Primeau added. "She really is here for the team and she wants the team to do well… to see that for her is really special and we're just happy that we get to work with her every day."

The Leathernecks will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 31), facing the University of North Dakota. Kickoff at the Northwest Field is scheduled for 1 p.m., with a Senior Day presentation following the game's conclusion.
