Volleyball Drops Final Match of FGCU Classic

The Leathernecks are back on the court on Tuesday (Sept. 11) at home.

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Western Illinois fell 3-0 in its final match of the FGCU Classic against tournament host Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday (Sept. 8). Mackenzie Steckler continued her impressive outing in the tournament, as she led the Leathernecks with seven kills while hitting at a .333 clip. 

After falling behind a point (4-3) to open the first set, the Leathernecks scored four-straight points to take an 8-4 lead to begin. The Purple and Gold had momentum through midway through the first set, but FGCU corralled it as the Eagles knotted up the score at 19. Florida Gulf Coast four of the last six points to take the set 25-22.

The Leathernecks found themselves down early in the second set and could not recover, as they fell 25-14. Trying to force a fourth set, the Leathernecks could not stop the home team's momentum and were outlasted 25-10 in the final game of the match. 

In the tournament, Steckler recorded 26 kills while hitting .500 while recording three total blocks. Claire Grove led the Leathernecks with 41 digs over the weekend and Jaime Johnson logged a team-high 45 assists.

The Leathernecks are back on the court on Tuesday at (Sept. 11) against SEMO at 7 p.m.
