Volleyball Outlasted In Five-Set Match Against SEMO

Steckler logs 10 kills and nine total blocks

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois volleyball team fell 3-2 Tuesday in a five-set showdown against Southeast Missouri. Mackenzie Steckler put together another impressive performance against the Redhawks, totaling 10 kills (.529 hitting percentage), seven block assists and two solo blocks.

"There is no reason to question these kids' hearts, effort or toughness. I was proud that we came back to win the second and third set after letting the first one get away," head coach Ben Staupe said. "The way we battled in the fifth set after falling behind showed that we never lacked the effort."

The Redhawks took the first set 25-23, but the Leathernecks rallied and won the next two sets 25-22 and 25-18. Down 10-6 in the second set, the Purple and Gold won four points to tie the match at 10. The Leathernecks found themselves down again in the set at 22-20 but rattled off five straight points to win the second set 25-22.

Western Illinois  jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. The Leathernecks never found themselves down in the set and won after a Steckler kill and an attacking error by SEMO. The Redhawks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the fifth set, but the Leathernecks kept pressing and tied the game at nine after Melanie Patenaude recorded a kill that ignited the crowd inside Western Hall. The Redhawks won the remaining points to take the match.

Patenaude led the Leathernecks with 13 kills, while Erika Moore logged a team-high 19 digs. On the defensive side of the net, Riley Shumacher recorded five total blocks.

The Leathernecks are back on the court Sept 14 against Wright State (4:30 p.m.) and Sept. 15 versus tournament-host Valparaiso (12:30 p.m.) and Cornell (4:30 p.m.).
