Leathernecks Downed Twice In Crusader Classic

WIU falls to Cornell (3-0) and Valpo (3-0) on Saturday

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Western Illinois volleyball team was topped on Saturday (Sept. 15) by Valparaiso (3-0) and Cornell (3-0).
 
GAME ONE

Western Illinois fell behind in the first set against Valparaiso and could not stop the Crusaders. With the score knotted at two, the Crusaders rattled off six out of eight points to take a 10-4 lead. Valpo went on to take the set, 25-13.
 
The Leathernecks battled in the second set after tying up the score 15-15 after falling behind 14-12. Up 20-18, Valpo collected five out of the last six points to take the second game, 25-19.
 
Trying to force a fourth set, the Leathernecks fell in the third, 15-14. In the match, Mariah Mitchell and Melanie Patenaude each had four kills.
 
GAME TWO

The Big Red jumped out to a quick 15-11 lead in the first set, but Western Illinois won five straight points to go ahead 16-15. During the run, freshman Mariah Mitchell recorded three kills. Cornell regained its footing though, took back the lead and finished the set with a 25-20 win.
 
The Leathernecks took a 9-7 in the second set, but the Big Red answered by scoring six straight points to take a 13-9 advantage. After a back-and-forth middle of the set, Cornell won the last three points and took the second frame, 25-19.
 
The third set also went Cornell's way, as the Big Red won 25-22. Mitchell, Patenaude and Emma Norris each recorded eight kills.
 
Mitchell was named to the Crusader Classic All-Tournament team after logging 14 kills over the weekend.
 
The Leathernecks open league play against North Dakota on Friday  (Sept. 21) inside Western Hall. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
