Leathernecks’ Indiana Road Swing Begins at Evansville

Evansville, Indiana State and Indiana are on the docket for Leatherneck baseball.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois baseball will be spending a lot of time in the state of Indiana in the coming weeks as head coach Ryan Brownlee returns home to his alma mater Friday for a three-game set at Evansville before the Leathernecks take on Indiana State (March 10-12) and Indiana (March 13-14).
 
Game one at Evansville is set for 3 p.m., with games two and three slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Under Brownlee, Western is 3-4 all-time against the Purple Aces, taking a 3-0 victory in their last meeting on March 7, 2015.

Last Outing
Twelve Western pitchers made an appearance in the team's series finale at Murray State Monday. Javin Drake received the start and was one of eight to combine for 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball.
 
Entering the final frame, the Leathernecks held a 3-2 lead but dropped the contest 4-2 after the Racers recorded a 2-RBI double.

Johnathan Fleek, Deion Thompson and Drue Galassi have started all six games this season.
 
Fleek leads the contingent with a .364 batting average – one of six Leathernecks to be hitting above .300 – and has a team-high eight hits with two doubles and a triple.  He's currently working a six-game hitting streak.
 
Back-to-Back
Mitch Ellis is one of five Leathernecks this season to record three hits in a single game, and is the only player to do it twice. In back-to-back appearances against Murray State, he went 3-for-4 at the plate and added a pair of runs.
 
Ellis leads the team in hitting (.583), slugging (.667) and on-base (.583) percentages.
 
Scouting the Opposition
The Purple Aces (1-5) recorded a 9-8, season-opening win over Fordham, and have been on a five-game winless skid since. All six of their games have been on the road.
 
Three Aces are hitting above .300 this season in Troy Beilsmith (.381), Tanner Craig (.333), and Travis Tokarek (.304).
